FAQs

What is a neuropsychological evaluation?

A neuropsychological evaluation is a comprehensive assessment of how your brain is working. It measures cognitive abilities like memory, attention, problem-solving, language, visuospatial abilities, and processing speed, as well as looks at behavioral and emotional functioning. At Neuro Nebraska, these evaluations are evidence-based, deeply personalized, and designed to equip you with answers, clarify diagnoses, and guide treatment.

Who might benefit from a neuropsychological evaluation?

Anyone experiencing changes or concerns related to memory, focus, or thinking may benefit. Neuropsychological evaluations are commonly recommended for concerns related to memory loss, aging, dementia, brain injuries, stroke, brain fog, concussion, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, or various neurological and medical conditions. Also, individuals with a family history of dementia or Alzheimer’s sometimes find it helpful to get a cognitive baseline so that there is a comparison if they get neuropsychological testing in the future. Neuropsychological evaluation is particularly helpful for individuals who are wondering if they may be a candidate for new medications for Alzheimer’s disease. At Neuro Nebraska, our expert neuropsychological evaluations help individuals and their loved ones get clarity about what’s going on and what to do next.

What happens during a neuropsychological evaluation?

You’ll meet one-on-one with a licensed neuropsychologist and complete a clinical interview to discuss your symptoms and history. You will then work one-on-one to complete thinking tasks that assess different areas of brain function. Most people find the process engaging and informative. Some questions are harder than others, and nobody gets every question correct — so it is meant to be challenging, and we just ask that you try your best. Rest assured, there is no pass/fail and no As, Bs, or Cs. Later, results are provided during a feedback visit with the neuropsychologist and are compiled into a report. At Neuro Nebraska, we explain each step and make the experience comfortable and supportive.

How long does an evaluation take?

The day of the neuropsychological evaluation includes a 1-hour clinical interview, followed by typically 1-3 hours of testing, depending on the individual’s situation, needs, and goals. We encourage breaks whenever needed throughout the day. The feedback visit takes approximately 45-60 minutes and either occurs on the same day or at a separate appointment, depending on the situation. At Neuro Nebraska, we tailor the length and scope of testing to provide the helpful answers you need in a convenient and efficient manner.

How do I prepare for my evaluation?

There is no way to study for neuropsychological testing. We just ask that you try your best to arrive at the appointment well-rested. Please eat and take your medications as you typically would prior to your appointment, and feel free to bring water and/or snacks to the visit. Also, be sure to bring your glasses or hearing aids if you use them. If you have any questions prior to your appointment, please let us know.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is needed to schedule an evaluation at Neuro Nebraska. Many clients come directly to us with memory concerns or cognitive questions, without a referral. Since we do not accept insurance, a referral is not required; however, if you plan to try to submit a superbill for potential out-of-network reimbursement, then you will want to check with your insurance company to see if they may require a referral.

Is neuropsychological testing covered by insurance?

Neuro Nebraska is a private pay practice and does not accept insurance. This allows us to spend more time with you, offer deeper insights, and provide care without delays or restrictions. We can provide a superbill you may submit for potential out-of-network reimbursement, though we cannot guarantee any reimbursement. Additionally, some individuals (such as those with Medicare) are not able to submit for reimbursement.
